Choosing an engine direction for a Datsun S30

Rebuild the L-series or swap? How to weigh originality, cost and the rest of the driveline.

The S30's original L-series six is a durable, simple engine with strong parts support. A well-built L28 with good induction and exhaust is enough to make the car feel quick, and it keeps the car original — which matters more to buyers than many owners expect.

A swap changes the character of the car and the scope of the project. Beyond the engine itself you are looking at mounts, cooling, fuel delivery, wiring, exhaust, and usually the gearbox and differential behind it. Budget the supporting work before committing.

Whichever route you take, plan the driveline as a system. More torque exposes a tired clutch, worn mounts and a diff that was never designed for it.

Document the build. Photographs, receipts and a written spec help at resale and help the next owner maintain the car correctly.
